Syuya Aoki
Photographer / Art Director
Born in Akita, Japan, in 1998, he studied in the Department of Photography at Tokyo Polytechnic University before leaving to pursue his own practice.
Since debuting his series hill in 2017, he has been presenting a wide range of experimental works through exhibitions and publications. His practice spans diverse approaches, from chemical interventions on film to glitch-based works such as luminous body’s (2018), created by overloading an old computer’s storage to capture the resulting visual errors. In autonomy (2019), he employed artificial intelligence to generate new imagery from a vast archive of his photographs, continuing his exploration of expanded photographic expression.
Working fluidly between analog processes, digital technologies, and conceptual fieldwork—as in his 2023 project cejitos, which began with unconscious typing and led to research trips in the United States—he remains deeply engaged with examining and reinterpreting the current state of photography.Works across a wide range of fields including fashion and advertising.
